Today scientists know that our brains grow new neurons, known as neurogenesis, especially in our short term memory center, the hippocampus.1 The rate in which we grow new neurons depends on our lifestyle choices including:
Flavonoids
Dark Chocolate and blueberries contain high levels of flavonoids, a nutrient group known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefits. Research now shows that flavonoids also increase neurogenisis.2
Running
Research has shown that aerobic activity helps the brain grow new neurons, but recent research on mice has shown that running brings the best benefits. 3
Stress and lack of sleep reduce the natural rate of neurogenesis. This is why reflexology can be so important for our brain health. Reflexology reduces stress and can promote better sleep4.
